Route Map
Not for the faint hearted or for those with low levels of fitness. I have done this trail in August and in January with deep snow in the Troodos mountains.
The route was extremely challenging on both occasions, due to the deep snow in January and the approx 37C temp on the 1st August. The latter was probably not recommended. Carrying 6 litres of water wasn't much fun either. I think a better time of year for doing this walk would be October, November or March, April when the temperatures are much cooler.
This was a tough walk, it was pretty much all up hill following the river valley up to the army camp. The route joined the Atalanta trail then headed into Troodos. Only part of the last section on the Atalanta trail was not up hill. The route started on wide tracks and then migrated to goat tracks and there was a requirement to cross streams and navigate around rocks and boulders. The terrain took its toll on my energy levels, but I took fruit along with me, which helped.
The return route retraced my steps on the Atalanta trail but then headed down to the beginning on wide tracks, it was fairly easy going except going continually down hill tended to wear on the knees.
